A warm greige: gray with a little brown in it. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

It has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.0 in L*): calm, but not flat.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 31. Walls at 63. Trim at 82. Deep note at 11. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 11Floor 31Walls 63Trim 82

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a mid brown woodAbout 21 points darker than the floor (L*), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Aged Barrel stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesThe floor is lighter than any wood stain we photographed, so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: charcoalThe floor's own warmth at half the strength, 34 points darker.
Across the wheel: storm blueThe opposite side of the color wheel from the floor, softened, to balance it.
Grounding: graphiteA deep note 30 points from the floor, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Matte blackBlack works with every undertone and gives a light room its outline.
Champagne bronzeA warm metal that agrees with the floor's greige undertone.
Brushed nickelA cool, bright metal that suits a greige floor.

Questions

About Vintage Taupe Ash and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Vintage Taupe Ash flooring?

Edgecomb Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-173, LRV 63.1): a warm white or greige in the same soft family as the floor (hue 94°). It sits 32 LRV points from the floor (LRV 31), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or Modern Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7632, LRV 62.5).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Vintage Taupe Ash?

Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2): a white with a little warmth (chroma 5.3), so trim does not look blue beside a warm floor.

What accent color goes with Vintage Taupe Ash?

Lafayette Green (Benjamin Moore HC-135, LRV 10.5): deep and quiet, 21 points darker than the floor in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Lafayette Green, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 31 sits between the two (11 and 82).

What wood furniture goes with Vintage Taupe Ash?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a mid brown wood (like our Aged Barrel stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces. A wood like our Silvered Gray sample is only 4.9 apart (CIEDE2000) and reads as a near miss.

Is Vintage Taupe Ash a light or a dark floor?

Mid tone: LRV 31 and L* 63, measured from its own picture, with a warm greige undertone. An LRV of 31 is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.

What colors should I avoid with Vintage Taupe Ash?

Walls at the floor's own lightness: Evergreen Fog (Sherwin-Williams SW 9130, LRV 30.4) sits within a point of this floor, so wall and floor would blur into one. Wood that almost matches: a table in a tone like our Silvered Gray stain sample is only 4.9 apart (CIEDE2000) and reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.

The room it suits

Light, size and wear, from the floor's own record.

An LRV of 31 is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.

Across a 12 foot room it lays about 16 boards, so the room reads open with few seams.

Waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.

  • Wear layer20 milAbout 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic.

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
