Why people choose Mullican
- Made in the United States. Most Mullican floors we carry are made in the United States, by Mullican's own account; a few are milled abroad.
- A traditional strip floor, or a wide plank. From 2-1/4 inch strip in St. Andrews and Oak Pointe 2.0 to wide engineered planks of about 9-1/2 inches in Castillian Premier.
- Finishes with long warranties. Most of Mullican's solid prefinished lines carry a lifetime finish warranty, and many of its engineered lines 50 years.
- Unfinished, when you want a color of your own. Engineered red oak and white oak in select and character grades, sanded and stained on site to any color.
The floors
Solid hardwood
3/4 inch boards that can be sanded and refinished many times over a long life. Chatelaine, Muirfield, Wexford, Nordic Naturals, Williamsburg Plank and Nature Solid run 3 to 5 inches wide; St. Andrews, Oak Pointe 2.0 and Shenandoah are the narrow 2-1/4 and 3 inch strips that suit an older house.
Engineered hardwood
A real wood top layer on a stable core, 3/8 to 5/8 inch thick. The Castillian family is white oak, much of it European white oak, from 6 to about 9-1/2 inches wide, plus a herringbone. Bellême, Tennessee Artisan, Serenity and Haven run about 7-1/2 inches, and Hillshire, Newtown Plank, Devonshire and Lincolnshire 3 to 5 inches.
Unfinished engineered
Boards in red oak and white oak, select and character grades, 3-1/4 to 7 inches wide, for a floor stained and finished in place. Our [stain colors](/sherwin-williams-minwax-duraseal-stain-colors) show what a color looks like on real oak.
The warranty, in plain terms
Mullican states a finish warranty for each line, and it depends on the line: lifetime on most solid prefinished collections and a few engineered ones, 50 years on many engineered lines such as Castillian, 25 years on others such as Hillshire and Oak Pointe 2.0, and 15 years on Shenandoah. Unfinished boards carry no finish warranty, because the finish is put on in your home. Mullican's own warranty governs; ask us for it with the floor you choose.
How we install it
Solid boards up to 4-1/4 inches wide are nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor; solid boards 5 inches and wider we nail and glue, because a wide solid board moves more with the seasons. Solid wood belongs on the main level and the floors above. Engineered boards are stapled to a wood subfloor or glued to a concrete slab, so they can go where solid cannot. Wood takes on the moisture of the air around it, so a floor needs to live in the house for a while before it goes down.
Living with it
A prefinished Mullican floor needs a broom, a vacuum without a beater bar and a hardwood cleaner, never a wet mop. An unfinished floor finished on site is cared for the way its finish asks, and we tell you which finish went down.
Questions
Is Mullican made in the USA? Most Mullican floors we carry are made in the United States, by Mullican's own account, and a few are milled abroad.
Is Mullican solid or engineered? Both. Mullican makes 3/4 inch solid hardwood, engineered hardwood from 3/8 to 5/8 inch thick, and unfinished engineered boards.
What finish warranty does Mullican give? It depends on the line, from 15 years to lifetime. Most solid prefinished collections carry a lifetime finish warranty and many engineered lines 50 years.
Can Mullican go in a basement? Solid hardwood should not go below ground level. Mullican engineered boards are the wood to look at for a basement, glued to the slab, where the slab is dry enough.
Can I choose my own stain color with Mullican? Yes, with the unfinished boards. We sand, stain and finish them in place in the color you pick.
