A near gray, with almost no warmth. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

Snow is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 0.3 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 78. Walls at 41. Trim at 86. Deep note at 12. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 12Walls 41Floor 78Trim 86

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a pale, bleached woodAbout 19 points darker than Snow in L* (72 against 91), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Country White stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesSnow is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 91), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: smoke1 in chroma, half the warmth of Snow (3), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: dove grayHue 298°, straight across the color wheel from the 118° of Snow, softened to balance it.
Grounding: stone grayA deep note at L* 61, 30 points from the 91 of Snow, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Polished nickelA bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Snow (chroma 2.6).
ChromeThe brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Snow at chroma 2.6.
Matte blackBlack works with every undertone; beside Snow at LRV 78 it gives the room its outline.

Questions

About Snow and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Snow flooring?

Clary Sage (Sherwin-Williams SW 6178, LRV 41): a soft, cool leaning color (hue 111°) that keeps Snow crisp and gray. It sits 37 LRV points from the floor (LRV 78), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or October Mist (Benjamin Moore 1495, LRV 46.5).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Snow?

Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9): 8 points over Snow in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Snow crisp.

What accent color goes with Snow?

Van Deusen Blue (Benjamin Moore HC-156, LRV 12): deep and quiet, 66 points darker than Snow in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Van Deusen Blue, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 78 sits between the two (12 and 86).

What wood furniture goes with Snow?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a pale, bleached wood (like our Country White stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces.

How do I put a room together around Snow?

Living room: Clary Sage walls and Extra White trim, a smoke rug in a flat weave on Snow, dove gray pillows, black or painted side tables. Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Van Deusen Blue, polished nickel hardware, Snow underfoot.

Is Snow a light or a dark floor?

Very light: LRV 78 and L* 91, measured from its own picture, with almost no undertone. At LRV 78, Snow is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

What colors should I avoid with Snow?

Walls at the lightness of Snow: Silver Satin (Benjamin Moore OC-26, LRV 74.9) sits 3 points from its LRV of 78, so wall and floor would blur into one. Whites that lean yellow: beside Snow, a near gray, they look dingy.

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
