A near gray, with almost no warmth. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

The grain and color of Oyster move from board to board (a spread of 3.0 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 59. Walls at 90. Trim at 86. Deep note at 12. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 12Floor 59Trim 86Walls 90

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a light natural woodAbout 20 points darker than Oyster in L* (61 against 81), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Silvered Gray stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesOyster is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 81), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: pewter1 in chroma, half the warmth of Oyster (3), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: slate blueHue 238°, straight across the color wheel from the 58° of Oyster, softened to balance it.
Grounding: smokeA deep note at L* 51, 30 points from the 81 of Oyster, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Polished nickelA bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Oyster (chroma 3.2).
ChromeThe brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Oyster at chroma 3.2.
Matte blackBlack works with every undertone; beside Oyster at LRV 59 it gives the room its outline.

Questions

About Oyster and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Oyster flooring?

Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90): a clean neutral (chroma 2.7) that keeps Oyster crisp and gray. It sits 31 LRV points from the floor (LRV 59), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Oyster?

Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9): 27 points over Oyster in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Oyster crisp.

What accent color goes with Oyster?

Van Deusen Blue (Benjamin Moore HC-156, LRV 12): deep and quiet, 47 points darker than Oyster in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Van Deusen Blue, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 59 sits between the two (12 and 86).

What wood furniture goes with Oyster?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a light natural wood (like our Silvered Gray stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces.

How do I put a room together around Oyster?

Living room: Chantilly Lace walls and Extra White trim, a pewter rug in a flat weave on Oyster, slate blue pillows, black or painted side tables. Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Van Deusen Blue, polished nickel hardware, Oyster underfoot.

Is Oyster a light or a dark floor?

Very light: LRV 59 and L* 81, measured from its own picture, with almost no undertone. At LRV 59, Oyster is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

What colors should I avoid with Oyster?

Walls at the lightness of Oyster: Repose Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7015, LRV 58.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 59, so wall and floor would blur into one. Whites that lean yellow: beside Oyster, a near gray, they look dingy.

The room it suits

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
