A greige: soft gray with a little warmth. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

Opal is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.5 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 57. Walls at 90. Trim at 82. Deep note at 17. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 17Floor 57Trim 82Walls 90

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a light natural woodAbout 19 points darker than Opal in L* (61 against 80), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Silvered Gray stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesOpal is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 80), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: pewter3 in chroma, half the warmth of Opal (7), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: slate blueHue 261°, straight across the color wheel from the 81° of Opal, softened to balance it.
Grounding: taupeA deep note at L* 50, 30 points from the 80 of Opal, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Matte blackBlack works with every undertone; beside Opal at LRV 57 it gives the room its outline.
Champagne bronzeA warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Opal (hue 81°).
Brushed nickelA soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Opal.

Questions

About Opal and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Opal flooring?

Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5): a warm white or greige in the same soft family as Opal (hue 110° against its 81°). It sits 33 LRV points from the floor (LRV 57), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart.

What trim and ceiling color goes with Opal?

Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9): 25 points over Opal in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone.

What accent color goes with Opal?

Gauntlet Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7019, LRV 17.4): deep and quiet, 39 points darker than Opal in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Gauntlet Gray, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 57 sits between the two (17 and 82).

What wood furniture goes with Opal?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a light natural wood (like our Silvered Gray stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces.

How do I put a room together around Opal?

Living room: Simply White walls and Swiss Coffee trim, black or painted a low table on Opal, a pewter rug, one slate blue cushion. Kitchen: Swiss Coffee cabinets, Gauntlet Gray on the island or one wall, matte black pulls, Opal underfoot.

Is Opal a light or a dark floor?

Very light: LRV 57 and L* 80, measured from its own picture, with a soft greige undertone. At LRV 57, Opal is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

What colors should I avoid with Opal?

Walls at the lightness of Opal: Worldly Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7043, LRV 57.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 57, so wall and floor would blur into one. Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Opal turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

The room it suits

Light, size and wear, from the floor's own record.

At LRV 57, Opal is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

At 9 inches a board, Opal lays about 16 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.

Opal is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.

  • CoreSPC, a rigid stone polymer coreFirm underfoot and resists dents from furniture.
  • WaterWaterproof (the maker's word)Wet mopping is fine; a flood is not.

From the floor's own record

What only this floor's data can say.

One of our most-asked-for floors: estimated 4 times, chosen 4 times since 2026.

Opal is lighter than 96 percent of the 1,198 vinyl floors we carry, measured the same way, and warmer than 14 percent of them.

A step lighter in the same line: PolarLRV 83, measured the same way, against 57 for Opal.

The same look in real wood: Waterfront, Anderson Tuftex Coast To Coast, only 1.0 apart in color (CIEDE2000).

To get this color on an oak floor you already have, the nearest of our stains is Country White (9.4 apart, CIEDE2000, from our own photographs on red oak).

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
