A greige: soft gray with a little warmth. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

Iona Stone is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.6 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 48. Walls at 90. Trim at 82. Deep note at 8. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 8Floor 48Trim 82Walls 90

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a honey toneAbout 20 points darker than Iona Stone in L* (55 against 75), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Rustic Beige stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesIona Stone is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 75), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: graphite4 in chroma, half the warmth of Iona Stone (8), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: slate blueHue 257°, straight across the color wheel from the 77° of Iona Stone, softened to balance it.
Grounding: pewterA deep note at L* 45, 30 points from the 75 of Iona Stone, so a rug keeps its edge.

Questions

About Iona Stone and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Iona Stone flooring?

Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5): a warm white or greige in the same soft family as Iona Stone (hue 110° against its 77°). It sits 42 LRV points from the floor (LRV 48), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Iona Stone?

Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2): 35 points over Iona Stone in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone.

What accent color goes with Iona Stone?

Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore HC-154, LRV 8.4): deep and quiet, 39 points darker than Iona Stone in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Hale Navy, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 48 sits between the two (8 and 82).

What wood furniture goes with Iona Stone?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a honey tone (like our Rustic Beige stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces. A wood like our Country White sample is only 6.4 apart (CIEDE2000) and reads as a near miss.

Is Iona Stone a light or a dark floor?

Light: LRV 48 and L* 75, measured from its own picture, with a soft greige undertone. At LRV 48, Iona Stone is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

What colors should I avoid with Iona Stone?

Walls at the lightness of Iona Stone: Mindful Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7016, LRV 47.7) sits within a point of its LRV of 48, so wall and floor would blur into one. Wood that almost matches Iona Stone: a tone like our Country White sample, 6.4 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.

The room it suits

Light, size and wear, from the floor's own record.

Iona Stone is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
