A near gray, with almost no warmth. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

Fossil has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.1 in L*): calm, but not flat.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 51. Walls at 93. Trim at 86. Deep note at 15. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 15Floor 51Trim 86Walls 93

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a light natural woodAbout 21 points darker than Fossil in L* (56 against 77), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Neutral stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesFossil is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 77), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: graphite2 in chroma, half the warmth of Fossil (4), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: slate blueHue 263°, straight across the color wheel from the 83° of Fossil, softened to balance it.
Grounding: pewterA deep note at L* 47, 30 points from the 77 of Fossil, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Polished nickelA bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Fossil (chroma 4.0).
ChromeThe brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Fossil at chroma 4.0.
Matte blackBlack works with every undertone; beside Fossil at LRV 51 it gives the room its outline.

Questions

About Fossil and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Fossil flooring?

High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7): a clean neutral (chroma 3.1) that keeps Fossil crisp and gray. It sits 41 LRV points from the floor (LRV 51), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Fossil?

Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9): 35 points over Fossil in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Fossil crisp.

What accent color goes with Fossil?

Distance (Sherwin-Williams SW 6243, LRV 15.2): deep and quiet, 36 points darker than Fossil in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Distance, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 51 sits between the two (15 and 86).

What wood furniture goes with Fossil?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a light natural wood (like our Neutral stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces.

How do I put a room together around Fossil?

Living room: High Reflective White walls and Extra White trim, a graphite rug in a flat weave on Fossil, slate blue pillows, black or painted side tables. Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Distance, polished nickel hardware, Fossil underfoot.

Is Fossil a light or a dark floor?

Light: LRV 51 and L* 77, measured from its own picture, with almost no undertone. At LRV 51, Fossil is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

What colors should I avoid with Fossil?

Walls at the lightness of Fossil: Colonnade Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7641, LRV 53) sits 2 points from its LRV of 51, so wall and floor would blur into one. Whites that lean yellow: beside Fossil, a near gray, they look dingy.

The room it suits

Light, size and wear, from the floor's own record.

At LRV 51, Fossil is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

At 7 inches a board, Fossil lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.

Fossil is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.

  • CoreSPC, a rigid stone polymer coreFirm underfoot and resists dents from furniture.
  • WaterWaterproof (the maker's word)Wet mopping is fine; a flood is not.

From the floor's own record

What only this floor's data can say.

One of our most-asked-for floors: estimated 2 times, chosen 1 time since 2026.

Fossil is lighter than 93 percent of the 1,197 vinyl floors we carry, measured the same way, and warmer than 6 percent of them.

The same look in real wood: Marble, Mullican Wexford™ 5", only 1.4 apart in color (CIEDE2000).

To get this color on an oak floor you already have, the nearest of our stains is Country White (9.9 apart, CIEDE2000, from our own photographs on red oak).

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
