A golden undertone, warm without leaning red. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

The grain and color of Desert Haze move from board to board (a spread of 6.9 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 31. Walls at 66. Trim at 82. Deep note at 8. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 8Floor 31Walls 66Trim 82

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a mid brown woodAbout 20 points darker than Desert Haze in L* (42 against 62), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Aged Barrel stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesDesert Haze is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 62), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: walnut brown15 in chroma, half the warmth of Desert Haze (34), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: storm blueHue 247°, straight across the color wheel from the 67° of Desert Haze, softened to balance it.
Grounding: mochaA deep note at L* 32, 30 points from the 62 of Desert Haze, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Aged brassA warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Desert Haze (hue 67°).
Unlacquered brassA warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Desert Haze (hue 67°).
Matte blackBlack works with every undertone; beside Desert Haze at LRV 31 it gives the room its outline.

Questions

About Desert Haze and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Desert Haze flooring?

Crushed Ice (Sherwin-Williams SW 7647, LRV 65.5): a soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Desert Haze stays golden without turning yellow. It sits 35 LRV points from the floor (LRV 31), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or Cloud White (Benjamin Moore OC-130, LRV 85.1).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Desert Haze?

Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2): 52 points over Desert Haze in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone.

What accent color goes with Desert Haze?

Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore HC-154, LRV 8.4): deep and cool, about 161° around the color wheel from Desert Haze and 22 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Lower cabinets or an island in Hale Navy, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 31 sits between the two (8 and 82).

What wood furniture goes with Desert Haze?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a mid brown wood (like our Aged Barrel stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces. A wood like our Natural sample is only 4.6 apart (CIEDE2000) and reads as a near miss.

Is Desert Haze a light or a dark floor?

Mid tone: LRV 31 and L* 62, measured from its own picture, with a golden undertone. At LRV 31, Desert Haze is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.

What colors should I avoid with Desert Haze?

Walls at the lightness of Desert Haze: Evergreen Fog (Sherwin-Williams SW 9130, LRV 30.4) sits within a point of its LRV of 31, so wall and floor would blur into one. Wood that almost matches Desert Haze: a tone like our Natural sample, 4.6 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.

The room it suits

Light, size and wear, from the floor's own record.

At LRV 31, Desert Haze is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.

At 7 inches a board, Desert Haze lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.

Desert Haze is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.

  • CoreWPC, a wood plastic composite coreA little softer and quieter underfoot.
  • WaterWaterproof (the maker's word)Wet mopping is fine; a flood is not.

From the floor's own record

What only this floor's data can say.

One of our most-asked-for floors: estimated 6 times, chosen 6 times since 2025.

Desert Haze is lighter than 62 percent of the 1,197 vinyl floors we carry, measured the same way, and warmer than 99 percent of them.

A step darker in the same line: Smoked AmberLRV 20, measured the same way, against 31 for Desert Haze.

The same look in real wood: Reunion, Shaw Floors Sanctuary Hickory, only 0.6 apart in color (CIEDE2000).

To get this color on an oak floor you already have, the nearest of our stains is Natural (4.6 apart, CIEDE2000, from our own photographs on red oak).

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
