A near gray, with almost no warmth. LRV is light reflectance value, the share of light a surface sends back, the same scale paint makers print on every chip: 0 is black, 100 is white.

Chesapeake Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.4 in L*): calm, but not flat.

Light reflectance of the floor and its paintsOn a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (white), the floor sits at 44. Walls at 93. Trim at 86. Deep note at 8. The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor, where a wall would blur into it.0255075100Deep note 8Floor 44Trim 86Walls 93

The shaded band is within 30 points of the floor. A wall inside it blurs into the floor; BS 8300 asks for at least 30 points between surfaces that meet.

Wood, rugs and metals

Contrast, not a match.

Wood furniture

A step darker: a honey toneAbout 20 points darker than Chesapeake Oak in L* (52 against 72), far enough to read as a choice. Like our Fruitwood stain sample.
A step lighter: black or painted piecesChesapeake Oak is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 72), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.

Rugs and fabric

Tone on tone: graphite2 in chroma, half the warmth of Chesapeake Oak (4), and 34 points darker in L*.
Across the wheel: storm blueHue 244°, straight across the color wheel from the 64° of Chesapeake Oak, softened to balance it.
Grounding: mochaA deep note at L* 42, 30 points from the 72 of Chesapeake Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.

Metals

Polished nickelA bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Chesapeake Oak (chroma 4.4).
ChromeThe brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Chesapeake Oak at chroma 4.4.
Matte blackBlack works with every undertone; beside Chesapeake Oak at LRV 44 it gives the room its outline.

Questions

About Chesapeake Oak and color, answered from the numbers above.

What wall color goes with Chesapeake Oak flooring?

High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7): a clean neutral (chroma 3.1) that keeps Chesapeake Oak crisp and gray. It sits 49 LRV points from the floor (LRV 44), more than the 30 points that keep a wall and a floor reading apart. Or Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90).

What trim and ceiling color goes with Chesapeake Oak?

Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9): 42 points over Chesapeake Oak in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Chesapeake Oak crisp.

What accent color goes with Chesapeake Oak?

Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore HC-154, LRV 8.4): deep and quiet, 36 points darker than Chesapeake Oak in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Lower cabinets or an island in Hale Navy, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 44 sits between the two (8 and 86).

What wood furniture goes with Chesapeake Oak?

Contrast, not a match: a step darker: a honey tone (like our Fruitwood stain sample), or a step lighter: black or painted pieces.

Is Chesapeake Oak a light or a dark floor?

Light: LRV 44 and L* 72, measured from its own picture, with almost no undertone. At LRV 44, Chesapeake Oak is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.

What colors should I avoid with Chesapeake Oak?

Walls at the lightness of Chesapeake Oak: Saybrook Sage (Benjamin Moore HC-114, LRV 45.5) sits within a point of its LRV of 44, so wall and floor would blur into one. Creamy or yellow whites: beside Chesapeake Oak, a near gray, they look dingy.

How we chose

Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).

BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.

The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.

A picture's lightness depends a little on how it was lit, so the floor's LRV is read from the evenly lit field the visualizer lays and rounded. See the real floor before you choose paint: visit the showroom, or ask for a free measure and estimate.
