# York in a warm modern room

York, from the Anderson Tuftex Buckingham line, is a mid dark white oak hardwood with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 14). Here it is with Revere Pewter walls, Alabaster trim, and Upward on the cabinets, chosen by the numbers.

## The floor
- York, Anderson Tuftex Buckingham: Engineered hardwood · White oak · 8 in (SKU AA818-11029)
- Price: $11.59 per sq ft · $385.25 a carton. Material only. Delivery and installation extra.
- Every color and detail: https://www.powellflooring.com/floors/andersontuftex/buckingham/york

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 14
- CIELAB (D65): L* 44.2, a* 6.4, b* 18.5, chroma 19.6, hue 71 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- It has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 1.8 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Revere Pewter (Benjamin Moore HC-172, LRV 55.1, +41.1 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 95°), so the floor stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-172/revere-pewter
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +68.5 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so the floor stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). A white with a little warmth (chroma 5.3), so trim does not look blue beside a warm floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Cabinets: Upward (Sherwin-Williams SW 6239, LRV 57.4). A light color with some life in it, so cabinets float off a dark floor (a 43 point step in LRV). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6239-upward/
- Cabinets in Upward or Alabaster: a dark floor needs light cabinets to float above it.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Ebony stain sample. About 15 points darker than the floor (L*), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a light natural wood, like our Silvered Gray stain sample. About 17 points lighter than the floor (L*).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: putty (#bdafa2). The floor's own warmth at half the strength, 28 points lighter.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: mist blue (#a7b9c8). The opposite side of the color wheel from the floor, softened, to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: espresso (#372f27). A deep note 24 points from the floor, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the floor's golden undertone.
- Metal: unlacquered brass. A warm metal that agrees with the floor's golden undertone.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone and gives a light room its outline.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the floor's own lightness: Rosemary (Sherwin-Williams SW 6187, LRV 13.6) sits within a point of this floor, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches: a table in a tone like our Nutmeg stain sample is only 5.0 apart (CIEDE2000) and reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Creamy yellow walls: yellow on yellow flattens a golden floor.

## The room it suits
- An LRV of 14 is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- Across a 12 foot room it lays about 18 boards, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Hardness: White oak: Janka 1,360 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Engineered (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)
