## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 8
- CIELAB (D65): L* 34.1, a* 0.1, b* 1.6, chroma 1.6, hue 85.4 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- Whitefill Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.0 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Clary Sage (Sherwin-Williams SW 6178, LRV 41, +32.9 from the floor). A soft, cool leaning color (hue 111°) that keeps Whitefill Oak crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/sw6178-clary-sage/
- Or walls: Coventry Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-169, LRV 48.2, +40.1 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 2.3) that keeps Whitefill Oak crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-169/coventry-gray
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 78 points over Whitefill Oak in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Whitefill Oak crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Cabinets: Classic Gray (Benjamin Moore OC-23, LRV 73.7). A light color with some life in it, so cabinets float off Whitefill Oak (a 66 point step in LRV). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-23/classic-gray
- Cabinets in Classic Gray or Extra White: a dark floor needs light cabinets to float above it.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step lighter: a honey tone, like our Golden Oak stain sample. About 17 points lighter than Whitefill Oak in L* (51 against 34).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: smoke (#979695). 1 in chroma, half the warmth of Whitefill Oak (2), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#909dad). Hue 265°, straight across the color wheel from the 85° of Whitefill Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: fog gray (#c4c4c3). A light note at L* 79, 45 points from the 34 of Whitefill Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the warm pieces in the room.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Whitefill Oak (chroma 1.6).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Whitefill Oak at chroma 1.6.

## Room by room
- Living room: Clary Sage walls and Extra White trim over Whitefill Oak, velvet in smoke with a slate blue pillow, aged brass lamps on low.
- Kitchen: Cabinets in Classic Gray so they float off Whitefill Oak, Extra White walls and trim, polished nickel pulls.
- Bedroom: Coventry Gray walls, smoke bedding, nightstands in a honey tone, chrome on the lamps.
- Entry: A fog gray runner on Whitefill Oak, Classic Gray on the door, a polished nickel mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Whitefill Oak: Urbane Bronze (Sherwin-Williams SW 7048, LRV 8.1) sits within a point of its LRV of 8, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Whitefill Oak: a tone like our Heritage Brown sample, 6.1 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Whites that lean yellow: beside Whitefill Oak, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 8, Whitefill Oak is dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7 inches a board, Whitefill Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Whitefill Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Finish: ScufResist®
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
