# White Wash in a coastal room

White Wash, from the Stanton Timber Land line, is a very light vinyl plank with almost no undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 88). Here, it’s paired with Worldly Gray walls, Extra White trim, and Still Water as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 88
- CIELAB (D65): L* 95, a* -0.4, b* 2.1, chroma 2.1, hue 100.2 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- White Wash is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.0 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: Worldly Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7043, LRV 57.2, -30.3 from the floor). A quiet neutral. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw7043-worldly-gray/
- Or walls: Revere Pewter (Benjamin Moore HC-172, LRV 55.1, -32.4 from the floor). A quiet neutral. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-172/revere-pewter
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 2 points over White Wash in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps White Wash crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Still Water (Sherwin-Williams SW 6223, LRV 10.1). Deep and quiet, 77 points darker than White Wash in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6223-still-water/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Still Water, uppers and trim in Extra White.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a pale, bleached wood, like our Country White stain sample. About 23 points darker than White Wash in L* (72 against 95), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. White Wash is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 95), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: smoke (#949392). 1 in chroma, half the warmth of White Wash (2), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: mist blue (#a8adc0). Hue 280°, straight across the color wheel from the 100° of White Wash, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: stone gray (#9e9e9c). A deep note at L* 65, 30 points from the 95 of White Wash, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of White Wash (chroma 2.1).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against White Wash at chroma 2.1.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside White Wash at LRV 88 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Worldly Gray walls and Extra White trim, a smoke rug in a flat weave on White Wash, mist blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Still Water, polished nickel hardware, White Wash underfoot.
- Bedroom: Revere Pewter walls, smoke linen, a mist blue throw, chrome on the lamps.
- Bath: Still Water on the vanity, Extra White walls, a stone gray mat, matte black fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Whites that lean yellow: beside White Wash, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 88, White Wash is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 7 inches a board, White Wash lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- White Wash is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
