# Vintage Taupe Ash in a Japandi room

Vintage Taupe Ash, from the COREtec Originals Premium line, is a mid tone vinyl plank with a warm greige undertone, measured from its own picture: LRV 31. Here it is with Edgecomb Gray walls, Alabaster trim and Lafayette Green as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 31
- CIELAB (D65): L* 62.7, a* 4.4, b* 10.8, chroma 11.7, hue 67.9 degrees
- Undertone: a warm greige: gray with a little brown in it
- It has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.0 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Edgecomb Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-173, LRV 63.1, +31.8 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as the floor (hue 94°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-173/edgecomb-gray
- Or walls: Modern Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7632, LRV 62.5, +31.2 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as the floor (hue 82°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw7632-modern-gray/
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). A white with a little warmth (chroma 5.3), so trim does not look blue beside a warm floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Deep note: Lafayette Green (Benjamin Moore HC-135, LRV 10.5). Deep and quiet, 21 points darker than the floor in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-135/lafayette-green
- Lower cabinets or an island in Lafayette Green, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 31 sits between the two (11 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a mid brown wood, like our Aged Barrel stain sample. About 21 points darker than the floor (L*), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. The floor is lighter than any wood stain we photographed, so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: charcoal (#4a423c). The floor's own warmth at half the strength, 34 points darker.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#4b5e6a). The opposite side of the color wheel from the floor, softened, to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: graphite (#524c47). A deep note 30 points from the floor, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone and gives a light room its outline.
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the floor's greige undertone.
- Metal: brushed nickel. A cool, bright metal that suits a greige floor.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the floor's own lightness: Evergreen Fog (Sherwin-Williams SW 9130, LRV 30.4) sits within a point of this floor, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches: a table in a tone like our Silvered Gray stain sample is only 4.9 apart (CIEDE2000) and reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- An LRV of 31 is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- Across a 12 foot room it lays about 16 boards, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (spills and wet mopping are fine; standing water from a flood is a different matter)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
