# Sonia Marble in a coastal room

Sonia Marble from the COREtec CT Plus Tile line is a very light vinyl tile with almost no undertone, measured from its own picture with LRV 65. Here it is with Evergreen Fog walls, Extra White trim, and Hale Navy as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture

- Sonia Marble has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.3 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Evergreen Fog (Sherwin-Williams SW 9130, LRV 30.4, -34.9 from the floor). A soft, cool leaning color (hue 116°) that keeps Sonia Marble crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/sw9130-evergreen-fog/
- Or walls: Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90, +24.7 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 2.7) that keeps Sonia Marble crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-65/chantilly-lace
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 21 points over Sonia Marble in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Sonia Marble crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore HC-154, LRV 8.4). Deep and quiet, 57 points darker than Sonia Marble in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-154/hale-navy
- Lower cabinets or an island in Hale Navy, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 65 sits between the two (8 and 86).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a pale, bleached wood, like our Natural stain sample. About 18 points darker than Sonia Marble in L* (67 against 85), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Sonia Marble is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 85), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: pewter (#797977). 1 in chroma, half the warmth of Sonia Marble (2), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#8f91a3). Hue 287°, straight across the color wheel from the 107° of Sonia Marble, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: smoke (#838382). A deep note at L* 55, 30 points from the 85 of Sonia Marble, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Sonia Marble (chroma 2.0).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Sonia Marble at chroma 2.0.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Sonia Marble at LRV 65 it gives the room its outline.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Sonia Marble: Balboa Mist (Benjamin Moore OC-27, LRV 65.5) sits within a point of its LRV of 65, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Creamy or yellow whites: beside Sonia Marble, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 65, Sonia Marble is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 12 inches a tile, a 12 foot room is about 12 tiles across.
- Sonia Marble is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed design, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
