# Snow in a coastal room

Snow, from the Stanton Boulevard line, is a very light vinyl tile with almost no undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 78). Here, it sits with Clary Sage walls, Extra White trim and Van Deusen Blue as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## The floor

- Price: $4.75 per sq ft · $83.84 a carton. Material only. Delivery and installation extra.
- Every color and detail: https://www.powellflooring.com/floors/stanton/boulevard/snow

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 78
- CIELAB (D65): L* 90.8, a* -1.2, b* 2.3, chroma 2.6, hue 117.7 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- Snow is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 0.3 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: Clary Sage (Sherwin-Williams SW 6178, LRV 41, -37 from the floor). A soft, cool leaning color (hue 111°) that keeps Snow crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/sw6178-clary-sage/
- Or walls: October Mist (Benjamin Moore 1495, LRV 46.5, -31.5 from the floor). A soft, cool leaning color (hue 114°) that keeps Snow crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/1495/october-mist
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 8 points over Snow in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Snow crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Van Deusen Blue (Benjamin Moore HC-156, LRV 12). Deep and quiet, 66 points darker than Snow in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-156/van-deusen-blue
- Lower cabinets or an island in Van Deusen Blue, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 78 sits between the two (12 and 86).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a pale, bleached wood, like our Country White stain sample. About 19 points darker than Snow in L* (72 against 91), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Snow is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 91), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: smoke (#888886). 1 in chroma, half the warmth of Snow (3), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: dove gray (#a4a0b2). Hue 298°, straight across the color wheel from the 118° of Snow, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: stone gray (#939391). A deep note at L* 61, 30 points from the 91 of Snow, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Snow (chroma 2.6).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Snow at chroma 2.6.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Snow at LRV 78 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Clary Sage walls and Extra White trim, a smoke rug in a flat weave on Snow, dove gray pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Van Deusen Blue, polished nickel hardware, Snow underfoot.
- Bedroom: October Mist walls, smoke linen, a dove gray throw, chrome on the lamps.
- Bath: Van Deusen Blue on the vanity, Extra White walls, a stone gray mat, matte black fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Snow: Silver Satin (Benjamin Moore OC-26, LRV 74.9) sits 3 points from its LRV of 78, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Whites that lean yellow: beside Snow, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 78, Snow is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 16 inches a tile, a 12 foot room is about 9 tiles across.
- Snow is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
