# Roswell Hickory in a coastal room

Roswell Hickory, from the COREtec Pro Classics line, is a light vinyl plank with an amber undertone (LRV 44, measured from its own picture). Here it is with Chantilly Lace walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Still Water as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 44
- CIELAB (D65): L* 72.5, a* 5.8, b* 12.9, chroma 14.1, hue 65.7 degrees
- Undertone: an amber undertone, warm and a little orange
- Roswell Hickory has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.4 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90, +45.6 from the floor). Its undertone leans green (hue 125°), which quiets the orange in Roswell Hickory (hue 66°) instead of echoing it. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-65/chantilly-lace
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +38.1 from the floor). Its undertone leans green (hue 93°), which quiets the orange in Roswell Hickory (hue 66°) instead of echoing it. - Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 38 points over Roswell Hickory in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its amber undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Still Water (Sherwin-Williams SW 6223, LRV 10.1). Deep and cool, about 142° around the color wheel from Roswell Hickory and 34 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. - Lower cabinets or an island in Still Water, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 44 sits between the two (10 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a honey tone, like our Fruitwood stain sample. About 20 points darker than Roswell Hickory in L* (52 against 73), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Roswell Hickory is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 73), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: mocha (#635951). 6 in chroma, half the warmth of Roswell Hickory (14), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#637682). Hue 246°, straight across the color wheel from the 66° of Roswell Hickory, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: graphite (#6b635d). A deep note at L* 43, 30 points from the 73 of Roswell Hickory, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the amber undertone of Roswell Hickory (chroma 14.1).
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the amber undertone of Roswell Hickory (hue 66°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Chantilly Lace walls.

## Room by room
- Living room: Chantilly Lace walls and Swiss Coffee trim, a mocha rug in a flat weave on Roswell Hickory, storm blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Swiss Coffee cabinets with an island in Still Water, polished nickel hardware, Roswell Hickory underfoot.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, mocha linen, a storm blue throw, aged brass on the lamps.
- Bath: Still Water on the vanity, Swiss Coffee walls, a graphite mat, unlacquered brass fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Roswell Hickory: Saybrook Sage (Benjamin Moore HC-114, LRV 45.5) sits within a point of its LRV of 44, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Roswell Hickory: a tone like our Country White sample, 1.8 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Pink or peach beige walls: they pull more orange out of the amber undertone of Roswell Hickory (hue 66°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 44, Roswell Hickory is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 7 inches a board, Roswell Hickory lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Roswell Hickory is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
