# Oyster in a coastal room

Oyster, from the Shaw Floors Paragon Tile Plus line, is a very light vinyl tile with almost no undertone (LRV 59, measured from its own picture). Here it is with Chantilly Lace walls, Extra White trim and Van Deusen Blue as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 59
- CIELAB (D65): L* 81.2, a* 1.7, b* 2.7, chroma 3.2, hue 57.5 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- The grain and color of Oyster move from board to board (a spread of 3.0 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

## Paint
- Walls: Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90, +31.2 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 2.7) that keeps Oyster crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-65/chantilly-lace
- Or walls: High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7, +33.9 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 3.1) that keeps Oyster crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7757-high-reflective-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 27 points over Oyster in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Oyster crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Van Deusen Blue (Benjamin Moore HC-156, LRV 12). Deep and quiet, 47 points darker than Oyster in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-156/van-deusen-blue
- Lower cabinets or an island in Van Deusen Blue, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 59 sits between the two (12 and 86).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a light natural wood, like our Silvered Gray stain sample. About 20 points darker than Oyster in L* (61 against 81), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Oyster is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 81), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: pewter (#726f6e). 1 in chroma, half the warmth of Oyster (3), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#778d98). Hue 238°, straight across the color wheel from the 58° of Oyster, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: smoke (#7c7a78). A deep note at L* 51, 30 points from the 81 of Oyster, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Oyster (chroma 3.2).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Oyster at chroma 3.2.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Oyster at LRV 59 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Chantilly Lace walls and Extra White trim, a pewter rug in a flat weave on Oyster, slate blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Van Deusen Blue, polished nickel hardware, Oyster underfoot.
- Bedroom: High Reflective White walls, pewter linen, a slate blue throw, chrome on the lamps.
- Bath: Van Deusen Blue on the vanity, Extra White walls, a smoke mat, matte black fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Oyster: Repose Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7015, LRV 58.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 59, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Whites that lean yellow: beside Oyster, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 59, Oyster is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 12 inches a tile, a 12 foot room is about 12 tiles across.
- Oyster is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed design, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Finish: ScufResist®
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
