# Opal in a Japandi room

Opal from the Stanton Weatherly line is a very light vinyl plank with a soft greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 57). Here it is with Simply White walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Gauntlet Gray as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 57
- CIELAB (D65): L* 80.1, a* 1.1, b* 6.6, chroma 6.7, hue 80.9 degrees
- Undertone: a greige: soft gray with a little warmth
- Opal is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.5 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +32.7 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Opal (hue 110° against its 81°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 25 points over Opal in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Gauntlet Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7019, LRV 17.4). Deep and quiet, 39 points darker than Opal in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw7019-gauntlet-gray/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Gauntlet Gray, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 57 sits between the two (17 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a light natural wood, like our Silvered Gray stain sample. About 19 points darker than Opal in L* (61 against 80), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Opal is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 80), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: pewter (#706d68). 3 in chroma, half the warmth of Opal (7), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#7a8897). Hue 261°, straight across the color wheel from the 81° of Opal, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: taupe (#7a7773). A deep note at L* 50, 30 points from the 80 of Opal, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Opal at LRV 57 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Opal (hue 81°).
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Opal.

## Room by room
- Living room: Simply White walls and Swiss Coffee trim, black or painted a low table on Opal, a pewter rug, one slate blue cushion.
- Kitchen: Swiss Coffee cabinets, Gauntlet Gray on the island or one wall, matte black pulls, Opal underfoot.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, a low bed in a light natural wood, pewter linen, champagne bronze in small doses.
- Entry: Black or painted a bench, a taupe mat on Opal, brushed nickel hooks.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Opal: Worldly Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7043, LRV 57.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 57, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Opal turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 57, Opal is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 9 inches a board, Opal lays about 16 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Opal is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
