# Oat in a warm modern room

Oat, from the Stanton Oakridge line, is a mid tone vinyl plank with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 33). Here it is with Gray Owl walls, Swiss Coffee trim and Van Deusen Blue as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## The floor
- Oat, Stanton Oakridge: Waterproof vinyl plank · WPC · 4 in (SKU 71451)
- Price: $4.49 per sq ft · $104.89 a carton. Material only. Delivery and installation extra.
- Every color and detail: https://www.powellflooring.com/floors/stanton/oakridge/oat

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 33
- CIELAB (D65): L* 63.8, a* 6.2, b* 28.6, chroma 29.2, hue 77.8 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Oat is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.5 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: Gray Owl (Benjamin Moore OC-52, LRV 64.5, +31.9 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 115°), so Oat stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-52/gray-owl
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +49.9 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Oat stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 49 points over Oat in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Van Deusen Blue (Benjamin Moore HC-156, LRV 12). Deep and cool, about 177° around the color wheel from Oat and 21 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-156/van-deusen-blue
- Lower cabinets or an island in Van Deusen Blue, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 33 sits between the two (12 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a mid brown wood, like our Nutmeg stain sample. About 20 points darker than Oat in L* (43 against 64), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Oat is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 64), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#524432). 13 in chroma, half the warmth of Oat (29), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#515f6d). Hue 258°, straight across the color wheel from the 78° of Oat, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#594e40). A deep note at L* 34, 30 points from the 64 of Oat, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Oat (hue 78°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Gray Owl walls.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Oat at LRV 33 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Gray Owl walls and Swiss Coffee trim around Oat, a walnut brown rug with a mocha border, a coffee table in a mid brown wood, aged brass lamps.
- Kitchen: Van Deusen Blue on the island or the lower cabinets, Swiss Coffee uppers, unlacquered brass pulls, Oat underfoot.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, bedding in walnut brown with one storm blue pillow, black or painted nightstands.
- Entry: A mocha runner on Oat, Van Deusen Blue on the front door, a matte black mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Oat: Acacia Haze (Sherwin-Williams SW 9132, LRV 32.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 33, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Oat: a tone like our Silvered Gray sample, 6.6 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Oat (hue 78°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 33, Oat is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 4 inches a board, Oat lays about 36 boards across a 12 foot room.
- Oat is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
