# Norwegian Maple in a warm modern room

Norwegian Maple from the COREtec Originals Classics line is a mid tone vinyl plank with a golden undertone, with an LRV of 38 measured from its own picture. Here it is with White Dove walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Newburg Green as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 38
- CIELAB (D65): L* 67.6, a* 10.8, b* 33.1, chroma 34.8, hue 72 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Norwegian Maple is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.7 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: White Dove (Benjamin Moore OC-17, LRV 83.2, +45.7 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 105°), so Norwegian Maple stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-17/white-dove
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +45 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Norwegian Maple stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 44 points over Norwegian Maple in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Newburg Green (Benjamin Moore HC-158, LRV 10.6). Deep and cool, about 162° around the color wheel from Norwegian Maple and 27 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-158/newburg-green
- Lower cabinets or an island in Newburg Green, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 38 sits between the two (11 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a warm gray brown wood, like our Warm Gray stain sample. About 19 points darker than Norwegian Maple in L* (48 against 68), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Norwegian Maple is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 68), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#5f4c38). 16 in chroma, half the warmth of Norwegian Maple (35), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#586977). Hue 252°, straight across the color wheel from the 72° of Norwegian Maple, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#665646). A deep note at L* 38, 30 points from the 68 of Norwegian Maple, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Norwegian Maple (hue 72°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside White Dove walls.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Norwegian Maple at LRV 38 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: White Dove walls and Swiss Coffee trim around Norwegian Maple, a walnut brown rug with a mocha border, a coffee table in a warm gray brown wood, aged brass lamps.
- Kitchen: Newburg Green on the island or the lower cabinets, Swiss Coffee uppers, unlacquered brass pulls, Norwegian Maple underfoot.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, bedding in walnut brown with one storm blue pillow, black or painted nightstands.
- Entry: A mocha runner on Norwegian Maple, Newburg Green on the front door, a matte black mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Norwegian Maple: Jockey Hollow Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-108, LRV 39.5) sits 2 points from its LRV of 38, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Norwegian Maple: a tone like our Natural sample, 4.3 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Norwegian Maple (hue 72°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 38, Norwegian Maple is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 5 inches a board, Norwegian Maple lays about 29 boards across a 12 foot room.
- Norwegian Maple is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
