# Natural Relic in a modern farmhouse room

Natural Relic, from the Stanton Regal Manor line, is a mid tone vinyl plank with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 40). Here it is with White Dove walls, Alabaster trim and Black as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 40
- CIELAB (D65): L* 69.4, a* 6.7, b* 23.7, chroma 24.7, hue 74.3 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Natural Relic has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.2 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: White Dove (Benjamin Moore OC-17, LRV 83.2, +43.3 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 105°), so Natural Relic stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-17/white-dove
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +42.6 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Natural Relic stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 42 points over Natural Relic in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Deep note: Black (Benjamin Moore HC-190, LRV 4.6). Deep and quiet, 35 points darker than Natural Relic in LRV, a frame for a golden floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-190/black
- Lower cabinets or an island in Black, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 40 sits between the two (5 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a warm gray brown wood, like our Warm Gray stain sample. About 21 points darker than Natural Relic in L* (48 against 69), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Natural Relic is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 69), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#5e5142). 11 in chroma, half the warmth of Natural Relic (25), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#5d6e7b). Hue 254°, straight across the color wheel from the 74° of Natural Relic, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#665b4f). A deep note at L* 39, 30 points from the 69 of Natural Relic, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Natural Relic at LRV 40 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Natural Relic (hue 74°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside White Dove walls.

## Room by room
- Living room: White Dove walls and Alabaster trim, a walnut brown rug with a mocha edge on Natural Relic, a coffee table in a warm gray brown wood.
- Kitchen: Black on the island, Alabaster cabinets above, matte black pulls, Natural Relic underfoot.
- Dining room: A table in a warm gray brown wood on Natural Relic, black or painted chairs, aged brass pendants.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, walnut brown linen, a storm blue quilt, unlacquered brass on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Natural Relic: Jockey Hollow Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-108, LRV 39.5) sits within a point of its LRV of 40, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Natural Relic: a tone like our Country White sample, 4.9 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Natural Relic (hue 74°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 40, Natural Relic is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 7 inches a board, Natural Relic lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Natural Relic is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
