# Moonlight Beach in a warm modern room

Moonlight Beach, from the Robbins Coastside 7-1/2" line, is a mid dark white oak hardwood with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 22). Here it is with Silver Satin walls, Greek Villa trim, and Naval as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 22
- CIELAB (D65): L* 53.5, a* 9.6, b* 32.2, chroma 33.6, hue 73.4 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Moonlight Beach has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.2 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Silver Satin (Benjamin Moore OC-26, LRV 74.9, +53.4 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 105°), so Moonlight Beach stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-26/silver-satin
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +61 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Moonlight Beach stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Greek Villa (Sherwin-Williams SW 7551, LRV 84.2). 63 points over Moonlight Beach in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7551-greek-villa/
- Deep note: Naval (Sherwin-Williams SW 6244, LRV 4.5). Deep and cool, about 171° around the color wheel from Moonlight Beach and 17 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6244-naval/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Naval, uppers and trim in Greek Villa. The floor at LRV 22 sits between the two (5 and 84).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Heritage Brown stain sample. About 19 points darker than Moonlight Beach in L* (35 against 54), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Country White stain sample. About 18 points lighter than Moonlight Beach in L* (72 against 54).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: oatmeal (#dec7b0). 15 in chroma, half the warmth of Moonlight Beach (34), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#394955). Hue 253°, straight across the color wheel from the 73° of Moonlight Beach, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: chocolate (#433627). A deep note at L* 24, 30 points from the 54 of Moonlight Beach, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Moonlight Beach (hue 73°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Silver Satin walls.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Moonlight Beach at LRV 22 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Silver Satin walls and Greek Villa trim around Moonlight Beach, an oatmeal rug with a chocolate border, a coffee table in a charcoal wood, aged brass lamps.
- Kitchen: Naval on the island or the lower cabinets, Greek Villa uppers, unlacquered brass pulls, Moonlight Beach underfoot.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, bedding in oatmeal with one graphite pillow, nightstands in a pale, bleached wood.
- Entry: A chocolate runner on Moonlight Beach, Naval on the front door, a matte black mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Moonlight Beach: Retreat (Sherwin-Williams SW 6207, LRV 20.9) sits within a point of its LRV of 22, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Moonlight Beach: a tone like our Neutral sample, 4.4 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Moonlight Beach (hue 73°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 22, Moonlight Beach is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7.5 inches a board, Moonlight Beach lays about 20 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Hardness: White oak: Janka 1,360 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Engineered hardwood (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)
- Finish: Urethane with AIOx

- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
