# Monterey in a Japandi room

Monterey, from the Legacy Flooring Collection Brentwood Hills line, is a light white oak hardwood with a soft greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 47). Here it is with White Dove walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Rosemary as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## The floor
- Monterey, Legacy Flooring Collection Brentwood Hills: Engineered hardwood · White oak · 7.5 in (SKU W7914)
- Every color and detail: https://www.powellflooring.com/floors/legacy/brentwood-hills/monterey

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 47
- CIELAB (D65): L* 74.3, a* 0.4, b* 6.3, chroma 6.3, hue 86.2 degrees
- Undertone: a greige: soft gray with a little warmth
- The grain and color of Monterey move from board to board (a spread of 3.7 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

## Paint
- Walls: White Dove (Benjamin Moore OC-17, LRV 83.2, +36 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Monterey (hue 105° against its 86°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-17/white-dove
- Or walls: Creamy (Sherwin-Williams SW 7012, LRV 81.2, +34 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Monterey (hue 89° against its 86°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7012-creamy/
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 35 points over Monterey in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Rosemary (Sherwin-Williams SW 6187, LRV 13.6). Deep and quiet, 34 points darker than Monterey in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/sw6187-rosemary/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Rosemary, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 47 sits between the two (14 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a honey tone, like our Rustic Beige stain sample. About 20 points darker than Monterey in L* (55 against 74), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Monterey is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 74), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: graphite (#615f5a). 3 in chroma, half the warmth of Monterey (6), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#6d7988). Hue 266°, straight across the color wheel from the 86° of Monterey, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: pewter (#6b6965). A deep note at L* 44, 30 points from the 74 of Monterey, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Monterey at LRV 47 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Monterey (hue 86°).
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Monterey.

## Room by room
- Living room: White Dove walls and Swiss Coffee trim, black or painted a low table on Monterey, a graphite rug, one slate blue cushion.
- Kitchen: Swiss Coffee cabinets, Rosemary on the island or one wall, matte black pulls, Monterey underfoot.
- Bedroom: Creamy walls, a low bed in a honey tone, graphite linen, champagne bronze in small doses.
- Entry: Black or painted a bench, a pewter mat on Monterey, brushed nickel hooks.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Monterey: Amazing Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7044, LRV 46.9) sits within a point of its LRV of 47, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Monterey turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 47, Monterey is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 7.5 inches a board, Monterey lays about 20 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Hardness: White oak: Janka 1,360 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Engineered hardwood (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)
- Finish: UV Cured High Performance Urethane
