# Mist Oak in a modern farmhouse room

Mist Oak from the COREtec Originals Premium line is a mid dark vinyl plank with a warm greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 17). Here it is with Creamy walls, Alabaster trim, and White Dove on the cabinets, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 17
- CIELAB (D65): L* 48.7, a* 4.3, b* 10.7, chroma 11.5, hue 67.9 degrees
- Undertone: a warm greige: gray with a little brown in it
- Mist Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.6 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Creamy (Sherwin-Williams SW 7012, LRV 81.2, +63.8 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Mist Oak (hue 89° against its 68°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7012-creamy/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +72.1 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Mist Oak (hue 110° against its 68°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 65 points over Mist Oak in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Cabinets: White Dove (Benjamin Moore OC-17, LRV 83.2). A light color with some life in it, so cabinets float off Mist Oak (a 66 point step in LRV). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-17/white-dove
- Cabinets in White Dove or Alabaster: a dark floor needs light cabinets to float above it.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Ebony stain sample. About 20 points darker than Mist Oak in L* (29 against 49), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Natural stain sample. About 18 points lighter than Mist Oak in L* (67 against 49).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: dove gray (#c5bcb4). 5 in chroma, half the warmth of Mist Oak (12), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: mist blue (#b0c4d2). Hue 248°, straight across the color wheel from the 68° of Mist Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: charcoal (#352f2b). A deep note at L* 20, 29 points from the 49 of Mist Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Mist Oak at LRV 17 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Mist Oak (hue 68°).
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Mist Oak.

## Room by room
- Living room: Creamy walls and Alabaster trim, a dove gray rug with a charcoal edge on Mist Oak, a coffee table in a charcoal wood.
- Kitchen: Cabinets in White Dove so they float off Mist Oak, Alabaster walls and trim, champagne bronze pulls.
- Dining room: A table in a charcoal wood on Mist Oak, chairs in a pale, bleached wood, champagne bronze pendants.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, dove gray linen, a mist blue quilt, brushed nickel on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Mist Oak: Gauntlet Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7019, LRV 17.4) sits within a point of its LRV of 17, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Mist Oak: a tone like our Warm Gray sample, 0.9 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Mist Oak turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 17, Mist Oak is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 9 inches a board, Mist Oak lays about 16 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Mist Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
