# Mari Travertine in a coastal room

Mari Travertine from the COREtec CT Plus Tile line is a light vinyl tile with almost no undertone, measured from its own picture at LRV 51. Here it is with Snowbound walls, High Reflective White trim, and Hale Navy as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 51
- CIELAB (D65): L* 76.4, a* -0.9, b* 2.4, chroma 2.5, hue 109.8 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- Mari Travertine is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.4 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: Snowbound (Sherwin-Williams SW 7004, LRV 82.8, +32.2 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 2.8) that keeps Mari Travertine crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7004-snowbound/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +38.9 from the floor). A soft, cool leaning color (hue 110°) that keeps Mari Travertine crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7). 42 points over Mari Travertine in LRV, a clean white (chroma 3.1) that keeps Mari Travertine crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7757-high-reflective-white/
- Deep note: Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore HC-154, LRV 8.4). Deep and quiet, 42 points darker than Mari Travertine in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-154/hale-navy
- Lower cabinets or an island in Hale Navy, uppers and trim in High Reflective White. The floor at LRV 51 sits between the two (8 and 93).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a light natural wood, like our Neutral stain sample. About 21 points darker than Mari Travertine in L* (56 against 76), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Mari Travertine is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 76), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: graphite (#646462). 1 in chroma, half the warmth of Mari Travertine (3), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#7b7c8d). Hue 290°, straight across the color wheel from the 110° of Mari Travertine, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: pewter (#6e6e6d). A deep note at L* 46, 30 points from the 76 of Mari Travertine, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Mari Travertine (chroma 2.5).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Mari Travertine at chroma 2.5.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Mari Travertine at LRV 51 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Snowbound walls and High Reflective White trim, a graphite rug in a flat weave on Mari Travertine, slate blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: High Reflective White cabinets with an island in Hale Navy, polished nickel hardware, Mari Travertine underfoot.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, graphite linen, a slate blue throw, chrome on the lamps.
- Bath: Hale Navy on the vanity, High Reflective White walls, a pewter mat, matte black fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Mari Travertine: Coventry Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-169, LRV 48.2) sits 2 points from its LRV of 51, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Whites that lean yellow: beside Mari Travertine, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 51, Mari Travertine is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 12 inches a tile, a 12 foot room is about 12 tiles across.
- Mari Travertine is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed design, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
