# Maple Natural in a coastal room

Maple Natural from the Shaw Floors Ocala line is a mid tone maple hardwood with a golden undertone, measured from its own picture as LRV 39. Here it is with Snowbound walls, Alabaster trim, and Newburg Green as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 39
- CIELAB (D65): L* 68.4, a* 10.5, b* 36.3, chroma 37.8, hue 73.9 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- The grain and color of Maple Natural move from board to board (a spread of 5.6 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

## Paint
- Walls: Snowbound (Sherwin-Williams SW 7004, LRV 82.8, +44.3 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 87°), so Maple Natural stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7004-snowbound/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +51 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 110°), so Maple Natural stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 44 points over Maple Natural in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Deep note: Newburg Green (Benjamin Moore HC-158, LRV 10.6). Deep and cool, about 160° around the color wheel from Maple Natural and 28 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-158/newburg-green
- Lower cabinets or an island in Newburg Green, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 39 sits between the two (11 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a honey tone, like our Warm Gray stain sample. About 20 points darker than Maple Natural in L* (48 against 68), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Maple Natural is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 68), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#614e37). 17 in chroma, half the warmth of Maple Natural (38), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#5b6b79). Hue 254°, straight across the color wheel from the 74° of Maple Natural, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#685846). A deep note at L* 38, 30 points from the 68 of Maple Natural, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the golden undertone of Maple Natural (chroma 37.8).
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Maple Natural (hue 74°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Maple Natural (hue 74°).

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Maple Natural: Jockey Hollow Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-108, LRV 39.5) sits within a point of its LRV of 39, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Maple Natural: a tone like our Natural sample, 5.5 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Creamy yellow walls: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Maple Natural (hue 74°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 39, Maple Natural is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 5 inches a board, Maple Natural lays about 29 boards across a 12 foot room.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Hardness: Hard maple: Janka 1,450 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Engineered (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)
