# Jute in a warm modern room

Jute from the Shaw Floors High Plains 6 3/8 line is a mid dark hickory hardwood with a golden undertone (LRV 19, measured from its own picture). It’s shown with Cloud White walls, Alabaster trim, and Upward on the cabinets, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 19
- CIELAB (D65): L* 50.2, a* 7.6, b* 18.2, chroma 19.8, hue 67.3 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Jute is calm and even from board to board (a spread of 1.5 in L*), so it reads as one quiet plane.

## Paint
- Walls: Cloud White (Benjamin Moore OC-130, LRV 85.1, +66.5 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 106°), so Jute stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-130/cloud-white
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +63.9 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Jute stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 64 points over Jute in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Cabinets: Upward (Sherwin-Williams SW 6239, LRV 57.4). A light color with some life in it, so cabinets float off Jute (a 39 point step in LRV). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6239-upward/
- Cabinets in Upward or Alabaster: a dark floor needs light cabinets to float above it.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Ebony stain sample. About 21 points darker than Jute in L* (29 against 50), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Natural stain sample. About 17 points lighter than Jute in L* (67 against 50).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: oatmeal (#cebfb2). 9 in chroma, half the warmth of Jute (20), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#374955). Hue 247°, straight across the color wheel from the 67° of Jute, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: espresso (#382f28). A deep note at L* 20, 30 points from the 50 of Jute, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Jute (hue 67°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Cloud White walls.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Jute at LRV 19 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Cloud White walls and Alabaster trim around Jute, an oatmeal rug with an espresso border, a coffee table in a charcoal wood, aged brass lamps.
- Kitchen: Cabinets in Upward so they float off Jute, Alabaster walls and trim, unlacquered brass pulls.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, bedding in oatmeal with one graphite pillow, nightstands in a pale, bleached wood.
- Entry: An espresso runner on Jute, Upward on the front door, a matte black mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Jute: Gauntlet Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7019, LRV 17.4) sits within a point of its LRV of 19, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Jute: a tone like our Fruitwood sample, 3.9 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Jute (hue 67°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 19, Jute is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 6.38 inches a board, Jute lays about 23 boards across a 12 foot room.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Hardness: Hickory: Janka 1,820 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Engineered (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)
