# Jordan in a coastal room

Jordan is a very light vinyl tile from the Shaw Floors Paragon Tile Plus line, with a soft greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 57). Here it is paired with High Reflective White walls, Greek Villa trim, and Still Water as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 57
- CIELAB (D65): L* 80, a* 1.7, b* 10, chroma 10.1, hue 80.6 degrees
- Undertone: a greige: soft gray with a little warmth
- Jordan has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.8 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7, +36 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Jordan (hue 110° against its 81°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7757-high-reflective-white/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +32.8 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Jordan (hue 110° against its 81°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Greek Villa (Sherwin-Williams SW 7551, LRV 84.2). 28 points over Jordan in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7551-greek-villa/
- Deep note: Still Water (Sherwin-Williams SW 6223, LRV 10.1). Deep and quiet, 47 points darker than Jordan in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6223-still-water/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Still Water, uppers and trim in Greek Villa. The floor at LRV 57 sits between the two (10 and 84).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a light natural wood, like our Silvered Gray stain sample. About 19 points darker than Jordan in L* (61 against 80), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Jordan is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 80), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: pewter (#726c65). 5 in chroma, half the warmth of Jordan (10), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#7a8897). Hue 261°, straight across the color wheel from the 81° of Jordan, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: taupe (#7b7671). A deep note at L* 50, 30 points from the 80 of Jordan, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the greige undertone of Jordan (chroma 10.1).
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Jordan (hue 81°).
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Jordan.

## Room by room
- Living room: High Reflective White walls and Greek Villa trim, a pewter rug in a flat weave on Jordan, slate blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Greek Villa cabinets with an island in Still Water, polished nickel hardware, Jordan underfoot.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, pewter linen, a slate blue throw, champagne bronze on the lamps.
- Bath: Still Water on the vanity, Greek Villa walls, a taupe mat, brushed nickel fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Jordan: Worldly Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7043, LRV 57.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 57, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Jordan turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 57, Jordan is very light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 12 inches a tile, a 12 foot room is about 12 tiles across.
- Jordan is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed design, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Finish: ScufResist®
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
