# Honeygrain in a modern farmhouse room

Honeygrain, from the Mullican Wexford™ 5" line, is a mid tone white oak hardwood with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 26). It pairs with Greek Villa walls, Alabaster trim, and Wrought Iron as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## The floor
- Honeygrain, Mullican Wexford™ 5": Solid white oak hardwood · White oak · 5 in (SKU 51305)
- Every color and detail: https://www.powellflooring.com/floors/mullican/wexford-5/honeygrain

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 26
- CIELAB (D65): L* 57.9, a* 3.6, b* 18.8, chroma 19.1, hue 79 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Honeygrain has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 1.8 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Greek Villa (Sherwin-Williams SW 7551, LRV 84.2, +58.4 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 94°), so Honeygrain stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7551-greek-villa/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +63.7 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 110°), so Honeygrain stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 56 points over Honeygrain in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Deep note: Wrought Iron (Benjamin Moore 2124-10, LRV 8.2). Deep and quiet, 18 points darker than Honeygrain in LRV, a frame for a golden floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/2124-10/wrought-iron
- Lower cabinets or an island in Wrought Iron, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 26 sits between the two (8 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a mid brown wood, like our Chestnut stain sample. About 20 points darker than Honeygrain in L* (38 against 58), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Country White stain sample. About 14 points lighter than Honeygrain in L* (72 against 58).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: linen (#e1d5c7). 9 in chroma, half the warmth of Honeygrain (19), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#43515f). Hue 259°, straight across the color wheel from the 79° of Honeygrain, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: charcoal (#484138). A deep note at L* 28, 30 points from the 58 of Honeygrain, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Honeygrain at LRV 26 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Honeygrain (hue 79°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Greek Villa walls.

## Room by room
- Living room: Greek Villa walls and Alabaster trim, a linen rug with a charcoal edge on Honeygrain, a coffee table in a mid brown wood.
- Kitchen: Wrought Iron on the island, Alabaster cabinets above, matte black pulls, Honeygrain underfoot.
- Dining room: A table in a mid brown wood on Honeygrain, chairs in a pale, bleached wood, aged brass pendants.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, linen linen, a graphite quilt, unlacquered brass on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Honeygrain: Evergreen Fog (Sherwin-Williams SW 9130, LRV 30.4) sits 5 points from its LRV of 26, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Honeygrain: a tone like our Silvered Gray sample, 5.4 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Honeygrain (hue 79°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 26, Honeygrain is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 5 inches a board, Honeygrain lays about 29 boards across a 12 foot room.
- Solid hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms above grade, kept out of baths and basements.
- Hardness: White oak: Janka 1,360 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Solid white oak hardwood (one piece of wood top to bottom, sanded and refinished for decades)
- Finish: PPG Ultra Low Gloss Finish
