# Golden Oak in a modern farmhouse room

Golden Oak, from the Fifth and Main Synthesis II line, is a mid tone vinyl plank with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 32). Here it looks great with Silver Satin walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Peppercorn as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 32
- CIELAB (D65): L* 62.9, a* 5.9, b* 17.4, chroma 18.4, hue 71.2 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Golden Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.1 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Silver Satin (Benjamin Moore OC-26, LRV 74.9, +43.4 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 105°), so Golden Oak stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-26/silver-satin
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +51 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Golden Oak stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 50 points over Golden Oak in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Peppercorn (Sherwin-Williams SW 7674, LRV 9.7). Deep and quiet, 22 points darker than Golden Oak in LRV, a frame for a golden floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw7674-peppercorn/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Peppercorn, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 32 sits between the two (10 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a mid brown wood, like our Nutmeg stain sample. About 20 points darker than Golden Oak in L* (43 against 63), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Golden Oak is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 63), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#4d4238). 8 in chroma, half the warmth of Golden Oak (18), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#4d5e6b). Hue 251°, straight across the color wheel from the 71° of Golden Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#554c44). A deep note at L* 33, 30 points from the 63 of Golden Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Golden Oak at LRV 32 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Golden Oak (hue 71°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Silver Satin walls.

## Room by room
- Living room: Silver Satin walls and Swiss Coffee trim, a walnut brown rug with a mocha edge on Golden Oak, a coffee table in a mid brown wood.
- Kitchen: Peppercorn on the island, Swiss Coffee cabinets above, matte black pulls, Golden Oak underfoot.
- Dining room: A table in a mid brown wood on Golden Oak, black or painted chairs, aged brass pendants.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, walnut brown linen, a storm blue quilt, unlacquered brass on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Golden Oak: Acacia Haze (Sherwin-Williams SW 9132, LRV 32.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 32, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Golden Oak: a tone like our Silvered Gray sample, 2.3 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Golden Oak (hue 71°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 32, Golden Oak is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 7 inches a board, Golden Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Living spaces and bedrooms; ask us about wet rooms.
- Wear layer: 12 mil (about 0.30 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
