# Fossil in a coastal room

Fossil from the Stanton Woodstock line is a light vinyl plank with almost no undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 51). It’s shown with High Reflective White walls, Extra White trim, and Distance as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## The floor

- Price: $3.75 per sq ft · $97.61 a carton. Material only. Delivery and installation extra.
- Every color and detail: https://www.powellflooring.com/floors/stanton/woodstock/fossil

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 51
- CIELAB (D65): L* 76.9, a* 0.5, b* 4, chroma 4, hue 82.7 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- Fossil has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.1 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7, +41.3 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 3.1) that keeps Fossil crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7757-high-reflective-white/
- Or walls: Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90, +38.6 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 2.7) that keeps Fossil crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-65/chantilly-lace
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 35 points over Fossil in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Fossil crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Distance (Sherwin-Williams SW 6243, LRV 15.2). Deep and quiet, 36 points darker than Fossil in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6243-distance/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Distance, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 51 sits between the two (15 and 86).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a light natural wood, like our Neutral stain sample. About 21 points darker than Fossil in L* (56 against 77), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Fossil is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 77), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: graphite (#676562). 2 in chroma, half the warmth of Fossil (4), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: slate blue (#73808f). Hue 263°, straight across the color wheel from the 83° of Fossil, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: pewter (#716f6d). A deep note at L* 47, 30 points from the 77 of Fossil, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Fossil (chroma 4.0).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Fossil at chroma 4.0.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Fossil at LRV 51 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: High Reflective White walls and Extra White trim, a graphite rug in a flat weave on Fossil, slate blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Extra White cabinets with an island in Distance, polished nickel hardware, Fossil underfoot.
- Bedroom: Chantilly Lace walls, graphite linen, a slate blue throw, chrome on the lamps.
- Bath: Distance on the vanity, Extra White walls, a pewter mat, matte black fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Fossil: Colonnade Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7641, LRV 53) sits 2 points from its LRV of 51, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Whites that lean yellow: beside Fossil, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 51, Fossil is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 7 inches a board, Fossil lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Fossil is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
