# Cyril Oak in a coastal room

Cyril Oak from the COREtec Originals Premium line is a light vinyl plank with a golden undertone (LRV 41, measured from its own picture). Here it is with Classic Gray walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Newburg Green as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 41
- CIELAB (D65): L* 69.9, a* 3.2, b* 16.9, chroma 17.2, hue 79.3 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Cyril Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.4 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Classic Gray (Benjamin Moore OC-23, LRV 73.7, +33.2 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 97°), so Cyril Oak stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-23/classic-gray
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +42 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Cyril Oak stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 41 points over Cyril Oak in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Deep note: Newburg Green (Benjamin Moore HC-158, LRV 10.6). Deep and cool, about 155° around the color wheel from Cyril Oak and 30 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-158/newburg-green
- Lower cabinets or an island in Newburg Green, uppers and trim in Swiss Coffee. The floor at LRV 41 sits between the two (11 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a honey tone, like our Golden Oak stain sample. About 18 points darker than Cyril Oak in L* (51 against 70), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Cyril Oak is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 70), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: mocha (#5c5348). 8 in chroma, half the warmth of Cyril Oak (17), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#606e7d). Hue 259°, straight across the color wheel from the 79° of Cyril Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: graphite (#645d54). A deep note at L* 40, 30 points from the 70 of Cyril Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the golden undertone of Cyril Oak (chroma 17.2).
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Cyril Oak (hue 79°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Classic Gray walls.

## Room by room
- Living room: Classic Gray walls and Swiss Coffee trim, a mocha rug in a flat weave on Cyril Oak, storm blue pillows, black or painted side tables.
- Kitchen: Swiss Coffee cabinets with an island in Newburg Green, polished nickel hardware, Cyril Oak underfoot.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, mocha linen, a storm blue throw, aged brass on the lamps.
- Bath: Newburg Green on the vanity, Swiss Coffee walls, a graphite mat, unlacquered brass fixtures.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Cyril Oak: Clary Sage (Sherwin-Williams SW 6178, LRV 41) sits within a point of its LRV of 41, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Cyril Oak: a tone like our Country White sample, 3.3 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Cyril Oak (hue 79°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 41, Cyril Oak is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 9 inches a board, Cyril Oak lays about 16 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Cyril Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 30 mil (about 0.76 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
