# Chesapeake Oak in a coastal room

Chesapeake Oak from the COREtec Pro Classics line is a light vinyl plank with almost no undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 44). Here it is with High Reflective White walls, Extra White trim, and Hale Navy as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 44
- CIELAB (D65): L* 72.3, a* 2, b* 4, chroma 4.4, hue 63.7 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- Chesapeake Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.4 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: High Reflective White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7757, LRV 92.7, +48.6 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 3.1) that keeps Chesapeake Oak crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7757-high-reflective-white/
- Or walls: Chantilly Lace (Benjamin Moore OC-65, LRV 90, +45.9 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 2.7) that keeps Chesapeake Oak crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-65/chantilly-lace
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 42 points over Chesapeake Oak in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Chesapeake Oak crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore HC-154, LRV 8.4). Deep and quiet, 36 points darker than Chesapeake Oak in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-154/hale-navy
- Lower cabinets or an island in Hale Navy, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 44 sits between the two (8 and 86).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a honey tone, like our Fruitwood stain sample. About 20 points darker than Chesapeake Oak in L* (52 against 72), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Chesapeake Oak is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 72), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: graphite (#5d5a57). 2 in chroma, half the warmth of Chesapeake Oak (4), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#627682). Hue 244°, straight across the color wheel from the 64° of Chesapeake Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#666362). A deep note at L* 42, 30 points from the 72 of Chesapeake Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Chesapeake Oak (chroma 4.4).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Chesapeake Oak at chroma 4.4.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Chesapeake Oak at LRV 44 it gives the room its outline.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Chesapeake Oak: Saybrook Sage (Benjamin Moore HC-114, LRV 45.5) sits within a point of its LRV of 44, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Creamy or yellow whites: beside Chesapeake Oak, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 44, Chesapeake Oak is light: it bounces light back into the room, suits north facing rooms, basements and small rooms, and shows dark grit more than lint.
- At 7 inches a board, Chesapeake Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Chesapeake Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
