# Chatelaine in a modern farmhouse room

Chatelaine, from the Shaw Floors Castlewood Oak line, is a mid tone white oak hardwood with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 36). Here, it pairs with Snowbound walls, Greek Villa trim, and Pewter Green as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 36
- CIELAB (D65): L* 66.7, a* 7, b* 22.8, chroma 23.9, hue 72.9 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Chatelaine has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.1 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Snowbound (Sherwin-Williams SW 7004, LRV 82.8, +46.6 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 87°), so Chatelaine stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7004-snowbound/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +53.3 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 110°), so Chatelaine stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Greek Villa (Sherwin-Williams SW 7551, LRV 84.2). 48 points over Chatelaine in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7551-greek-villa/
- Deep note: Pewter Green (Sherwin-Williams SW 6208, LRV 11.8). Deep and quiet, 24 points darker than Chatelaine in LRV, a frame for a golden floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/sw6208-pewter-green/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Pewter Green, uppers and trim in Greek Villa. The floor at LRV 36 sits between the two (12 and 84).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a warm gray brown wood, like our Warm Gray stain sample. About 19 points darker than Chatelaine in L* (48 against 67), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Chatelaine is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 67), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#584b3d). 11 in chroma, half the warmth of Chatelaine (24), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#566774). Hue 253°, straight across the color wheel from the 73° of Chatelaine, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#5f554a). A deep note at L* 37, 30 points from the 67 of Chatelaine, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Chatelaine at LRV 36 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Chatelaine (hue 73°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Snowbound walls.

## Room by room
- Living room: Snowbound walls and Greek Villa trim, a walnut brown rug with a mocha edge on Chatelaine, a coffee table in a warm gray brown wood.
- Kitchen: Pewter Green on the island, Greek Villa cabinets above, matte black pulls, Chatelaine underfoot.
- Dining room: A table in a warm gray brown wood on Chatelaine, black or painted chairs, aged brass pendants.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, walnut brown linen, a storm blue quilt, unlacquered brass on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Chatelaine: Debonair (Sherwin-Williams SW 9139, LRV 33.9) sits 2 points from its LRV of 36, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Chatelaine: a tone like our Silvered Gray sample, 5.5 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Chatelaine (hue 73°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 36, Chatelaine is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 7.5 inches a board, Chatelaine lays about 20 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Hardness: White oak: Janka 1,360 lbf (the force to press a steel ball halfway into the wood; a higher number dents less under heels and chair legs)
- Construction: Engineered (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)
