# Chapman in a warm modern room

Chapman, from the Shaw Floors Allegiance + Acc line, is a mid dark vinyl plank with a warm greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 13). Here it is with Revere Pewter walls, Swiss Coffee trim, and Stonington Gray cabinets, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 13
- CIELAB (D65): L* 43.1, a* 6.2, b* 9.4, chroma 11.3, hue 56.8 degrees
- Undertone: a warm greige: gray with a little brown in it
- Chapman has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.6 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Revere Pewter (Benjamin Moore HC-172, LRV 55.1, +41.9 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Chapman (hue 95° against its 57°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-172/revere-pewter
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +69.3 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Chapman (hue 93° against its 57°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9). 69 points over Chapman in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.7) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Cabinets: Stonington Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-170, LRV 59.4). A light color with some life in it, so cabinets float off Chapman (a 46 point step in LRV). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-170/stonington-gray
- Cabinets in Stonington Gray or Swiss Coffee: a dark floor needs light cabinets to float above it.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Ebony stain sample. About 14 points darker than Chapman in L* (29 against 43), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a light natural wood, like our Silvered Gray stain sample. About 18 points lighter than Chapman in L* (61 against 43).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: dove gray (#b7aca6). 5 in chroma, half the warmth of Chapman (11), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: mist blue (#a0b7c2). Hue 237°, straight across the color wheel from the 57° of Chapman, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: charcoal (#362f2c). A deep note at L* 20, 23 points from the 43 of Chapman, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Chapman (hue 57°).
- Metal: champagne bronze. A paler warm metal, quieter than brass beside Revere Pewter and Swiss Coffee.
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Chapman.

## Room by room
- Living room: Revere Pewter walls and Swiss Coffee trim around Chapman, a dove gray rug with a charcoal border, a coffee table in a charcoal wood, aged brass lamps.
- Kitchen: Cabinets in Stonington Gray so they float off Chapman, Swiss Coffee walls and trim, champagne bronze pulls.
- Bedroom: Dover White walls, bedding in dove gray with one mist blue pillow, nightstands in a light natural wood.
- Entry: A charcoal runner on Chapman, Stonington Gray on the front door, a brushed nickel mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Chapman: Rosemary (Sherwin-Williams SW 6187, LRV 13.6) sits within a point of its LRV of 13, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Chapman: a tone like our Aged Barrel sample, 2.4 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Chapman turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 13, Chapman is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7 inches a board, Chapman lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Chapman is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: SPC, a rigid stone polymer core (firm underfoot and resists dents from furniture)
- Finish: ScufResist®
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
