# Calypso Oak in a modern farmhouse room

Calypso Oak, from the COREtec Originals Enhanced line, is a mid tone vinyl plank with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 32). Here it is with Swiss Coffee walls, Greek Villa trim and Distance as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 32
- CIELAB (D65): L* 63.1, a* 6.7, b* 19.8, chroma 20.9, hue 71.3 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Calypso Oak has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 1.9 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Swiss Coffee (Benjamin Moore OC-45, LRV 81.9, +50.2 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 103°), so Calypso Oak stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-45/swiss-coffee
- Or walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +50.8 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Calypso Oak stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Trim and ceilings: Greek Villa (Sherwin-Williams SW 7551, LRV 84.2). 53 points over Calypso Oak in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7551-greek-villa/
- Deep note: Distance (Sherwin-Williams SW 6243, LRV 15.2). Deep and cool, about 175° around the color wheel from Calypso Oak and 17 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6243-distance/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Distance, uppers and trim in Greek Villa. The floor at LRV 32 sits between the two (15 and 84).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a mid brown wood, like our Nutmeg stain sample. About 20 points darker than Calypso Oak in L* (43 against 63), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: black or painted pieces. Calypso Oak is lighter than any wood stain we photographed (L* 63), so contrast comes from black, painted or upholstered pieces.
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: walnut brown (#4e4337). 9 in chroma, half the warmth of Calypso Oak (21), and 34 points darker in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: storm blue (#4d5e6b). Hue 251°, straight across the color wheel from the 71° of Calypso Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: mocha (#564c43). A deep note at L* 33, 30 points from the 63 of Calypso Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Calypso Oak at LRV 32 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Calypso Oak (hue 71°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Calypso Oak (hue 71°).

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Calypso Oak: Acacia Haze (Sherwin-Williams SW 9132, LRV 32.2) sits within a point of its LRV of 32, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Calypso Oak: a tone like our Silvered Gray sample, 2.4 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Creamy yellow walls: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Calypso Oak (hue 71°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 32, Calypso Oak is a mid tone: it holds its color in a sunny room and hides everyday dust and pet hair better than a very dark or very light floor.
- At 7 inches a board, Calypso Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Calypso Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
