# Blackstone Oak in a modern farmhouse room

Blackstone Oak from the COREtec Originals Classics line is a mid dark vinyl plank with a warm greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 22). Here it is with Alabaster walls, Greek Villa trim, and Tricorn Black as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 22
- CIELAB (D65): L* 53.6, a* 3.9, b* 7.8, chroma 8.7, hue 63.4 degrees
- Undertone: a warm greige: gray with a little brown in it
- The grain and color of Blackstone Oak move from board to board (a spread of 4.0 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

## Paint
- Walls: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2, +60.6 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Blackstone Oak (hue 98° against its 63°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +67.9 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Blackstone Oak (hue 110° against its 63°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Greek Villa (Sherwin-Williams SW 7551, LRV 84.2). 63 points over Blackstone Oak in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7551-greek-villa/
- Deep note: Tricorn Black (Sherwin-Williams SW 6258, LRV 2.8). Deep and quiet, 19 points darker than Blackstone Oak in LRV, a frame for a greige floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw6258-tricorn-black/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Tricorn Black, uppers and trim in Greek Villa. The floor at LRV 22 sits between the two (3 and 84).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Heritage Brown stain sample. About 19 points darker than Blackstone Oak in L* (35 against 54), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Natural stain sample. About 13 points lighter than Blackstone Oak in L* (67 against 54).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: fog gray (#d1c9c4). 4 in chroma, half the warmth of Blackstone Oak (9), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#364954). Hue 243°, straight across the color wheel from the 63° of Blackstone Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: charcoal (#3c3734). A deep note at L* 24, 30 points from the 54 of Blackstone Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Blackstone Oak at LRV 22 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Blackstone Oak (hue 63°).
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Blackstone Oak.

## Room by room
- Living room: Alabaster walls and Greek Villa trim, a fog gray rug with a charcoal edge on Blackstone Oak, a coffee table in a charcoal wood.
- Kitchen: Tricorn Black on the island, Greek Villa cabinets above, matte black pulls, Blackstone Oak underfoot.
- Dining room: A table in a charcoal wood on Blackstone Oak, chairs in a pale, bleached wood, champagne bronze pendants.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, fog gray linen, a graphite quilt, brushed nickel on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Blackstone Oak: Retreat (Sherwin-Williams SW 6207, LRV 20.9) sits within a point of its LRV of 22, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Blackstone Oak: a tone like our Rustic Beige sample, 5.7 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Blackstone Oak turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 22, Blackstone Oak is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7 inches a board, Blackstone Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Blackstone Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
