# Barrel in a warm modern room

Barrel, from the Anderson Tuftex Brasilia line, is a mid dark brazilian oak hardwood with a golden undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 22). Here it is with Dover White walls, Alabaster trim and Cascades as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 22
- CIELAB (D65): L* 53.9, a* 10.1, b* 24.6, chroma 26.6, hue 67.7 degrees
- Undertone: a golden undertone, warm without leaning red
- Barrel has a gentle movement from board to board (a spread of 2.5 in L*): calm, but not flat.

## Paint
- Walls: Dover White (Sherwin-Williams SW 6385, LRV 82.5, +60.6 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 93°), so Barrel stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw6385-dover-white/
- Or walls: Revere Pewter (Benjamin Moore HC-172, LRV 55.1, +33.2 from the floor). A soft neutral with a touch of warmth (hue 95°), so Barrel stays golden without turning yellow. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-172/revere-pewter
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 60 points over Barrel in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its golden undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Deep note: Cascades (Sherwin-Williams SW 7623, LRV 4.2). Deep and cool, about 130° around the color wheel from Barrel and 18 points darker in LRV, so each makes the other look richer. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/green-paint-colors/sw7623-cascades/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Cascades, uppers and trim in Alabaster. The floor at LRV 22 sits between the two (4 and 82).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Heritage Brown stain sample. About 19 points darker than Barrel in L* (35 against 54), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Country White stain sample. About 18 points lighter than Barrel in L* (72 against 54).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: oatmeal (#ddc8b7). 12 in chroma, half the warmth of Barrel (27), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#374955). Hue 248°, straight across the color wheel from the 68° of Barrel, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: chocolate (#43372c). A deep note at L* 24, 30 points from the 54 of Barrel, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: aged brass. A warm metal that agrees with the golden undertone of Barrel (hue 68°).
- Metal: unlacquered brass. Left unsealed, it darkens with handling to a softer warm tone beside Dover White walls.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Barrel at LRV 22 it gives the room its outline.

## Room by room
- Living room: Dover White walls and Alabaster trim around Barrel, an oatmeal rug with a chocolate border, a coffee table in a charcoal wood, aged brass lamps.
- Kitchen: Cascades on the island or the lower cabinets, Alabaster uppers, unlacquered brass pulls, Barrel underfoot.
- Bedroom: Revere Pewter walls, bedding in oatmeal with one graphite pillow, nightstands in a pale, bleached wood.
- Entry: A chocolate runner on Barrel, Cascades on the front door, a matte black mirror.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Barrel: Retreat (Sherwin-Williams SW 6207, LRV 20.9) sits within a point of its LRV of 22, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Barrel: a tone like our Fruitwood sample, 2.1 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Walls that lean yellow: yellow on yellow flattens the golden undertone of Barrel (hue 68°).

## The room it suits
- At LRV 22, Barrel is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7.5 inches a board, Barrel lays about 20 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Engineered hardwood: living spaces and bedrooms on every level, kept out of full baths.
- Species: Brazilian oak
- Construction: Engineered (a real wood face over a stable core, so it moves less with the seasons)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
