# Alabaster Oak in a Japandi room

Alabaster Oak, from the COREtec Originals Classics line, is a mid dark vinyl plank with almost no undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 21). Here it is with Misty walls, Extra White trim and Caviar as the deep note, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 21
- CIELAB (D65): L* 53.1, a* 2.2, b* 3.9, chroma 4.5, hue 59.9 degrees
- Undertone: a near gray, with almost no warmth
- The grain and color of Alabaster Oak move from board to board (a spread of 3.4 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

## Paint
- Walls: Misty (Sherwin-Williams SW 6232, LRV 63.9, +42.7 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 1.8) that keeps Alabaster Oak crisp and gray. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/blue-paint-colors/sw6232-misty/
- Or walls: Stonington Gray (Benjamin Moore HC-170, LRV 59.4, +38.2 from the floor). A clean neutral (chroma 3.2) that keeps Alabaster Oak crisp and gray. Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/hc-170/stonington-gray
- Trim and ceilings: Extra White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7006, LRV 85.9). 65 points over Alabaster Oak in LRV, a clean white (chroma 2.6) that keeps Alabaster Oak crisp. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7006-extra-white/
- Deep note: Caviar (Sherwin-Williams SW 6990, LRV 3). Deep and quiet, 18 points darker than Alabaster Oak in LRV, a frame for a gray floor. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/neutral-paint-colors/sw6990-caviar/
- Lower cabinets or an island in Caviar, uppers and trim in Extra White. The floor at LRV 21 sits between the two (3 and 86).

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a dark walnut tone, like our Golden Brown stain sample. About 20 points darker than Alabaster Oak in L* (33 against 53), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Natural stain sample. About 14 points lighter than Alabaster Oak in L* (67 against 53).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: fog gray (#cdc9c6). 2 in chroma, half the warmth of Alabaster Oak (4), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#354a54). Hue 240°, straight across the color wheel from the 60° of Alabaster Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: charcoal (#393735). A deep note at L* 23, 30 points from the 53 of Alabaster Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Alabaster Oak at LRV 21 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: polished nickel. A bright nickel with a touch of warmth, for the gray undertone of Alabaster Oak (chroma 4.5).
- Metal: chrome. The brightest and coolest finish, crisp against Alabaster Oak at chroma 4.5.

## Room by room
- Living room: Misty walls and Extra White trim, a low table in a pale, bleached wood on Alabaster Oak, a fog gray rug, one graphite cushion.
- Kitchen: Extra White cabinets, Caviar on the island or one wall, matte black pulls, Alabaster Oak underfoot.
- Bedroom: Stonington Gray walls, a low bed in a dark walnut tone, fog gray linen, polished nickel in small doses.
- Entry: A bench in a pale, bleached wood, a charcoal mat on Alabaster Oak, chrome hooks.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Alabaster Oak: Retreat (Sherwin-Williams SW 6207, LRV 20.9) sits within a point of its LRV of 21, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Whites that lean yellow: beside Alabaster Oak, a near gray, they look dingy.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 21, Alabaster Oak is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7 inches a board, Alabaster Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Alabaster Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
