# Aden Oak in a modern farmhouse room

Aden Oak, from the COREtec Originals Enhanced line, is a mid dark vinyl plank with a soft greige undertone (measured from its own picture: LRV 19). Here it is with Pure White walls, Alabaster trim and Cloud White on the cabinets, chosen by the numbers.

## Measured from its own picture
- LRV (light reflectance value, 0 black to 100 white): 19
- CIELAB (D65): L* 50.5, a* 1, b* 8.1, chroma 8.1, hue 83.1 degrees
- Undertone: a greige: soft gray with a little warmth
- The grain and color of Aden Oak move from board to board (a spread of 4.0 in L*), which helps hide everyday wear.

## Paint
- Walls: Pure White (Sherwin-Williams SW 7005, LRV 84, +65.2 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Aden Oak (hue 103° against its 83°). Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7005-pure-white/
- Or walls: Simply White (Benjamin Moore OC-117, LRV 89.5, +70.7 from the floor). A warm white or greige in the same soft family as Aden Oak (hue 110° against its 83°). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-117/simply-white
- Trim and ceilings: Alabaster (Sherwin-Williams SW 7008, LRV 82.2). 63 points over Aden Oak in LRV and warm enough (chroma 5.3) to read white, not blue, beside its greige undertone. Source: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/color/color-family/white-paint-colors/sw7008-alabaster/
- Cabinets: Cloud White (Benjamin Moore OC-130, LRV 85.1). A light color with some life in it, so cabinets float off Aden Oak (a 66 point step in LRV). Source: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-colors/color/oc-130/cloud-white
- Cabinets in Cloud White or Alabaster: a dark floor needs light cabinets to float above it.

## Wood, rugs and metals
- Wood a step darker: a charcoal wood, like our Ebony stain sample. About 22 points darker than Aden Oak in L* (29 against 51), far enough to read as a choice.
- Wood a step lighter: a pale, bleached wood, like our Natural stain sample. About 17 points lighter than Aden Oak in L* (67 against 51).
- Rug or fabric, tone on tone: fog gray (#c6c2bc). 4 in chroma, half the warmth of Aden Oak (8), and 28 points lighter in L*.
- Rug or fabric, across the wheel: graphite (#3c4856). Hue 263°, straight across the color wheel from the 83° of Aden Oak, softened to balance it.
- Rug or fabric, grounding: charcoal (#34312d). A deep note at L* 21, 30 points from the 51 of Aden Oak, so a rug keeps its edge.
- Metal: matte black. Black works with every undertone; beside Aden Oak at LRV 19 it gives the room its outline.
- Metal: champagne bronze. A warm metal that agrees with the greige undertone of Aden Oak (hue 83°).
- Metal: brushed nickel. A soft satin nickel, quieter than chrome, for the greige of Aden Oak.

## Room by room
- Living room: Pure White walls and Alabaster trim, a fog gray rug with a charcoal edge on Aden Oak, a coffee table in a charcoal wood.
- Kitchen: Cabinets in Cloud White so they float off Aden Oak, Alabaster walls and trim, champagne bronze pulls.
- Dining room: A table in a charcoal wood on Aden Oak, chairs in a pale, bleached wood, champagne bronze pendants.
- Bedroom: Simply White walls, fog gray linen, a graphite quilt, brushed nickel on the lamps.

## What to avoid
- Walls at the lightness of Aden Oak: Gauntlet Gray (Sherwin-Williams SW 7019, LRV 17.4) sits within a point of its LRV of 19, so wall and floor would blur into one.
- Wood that almost matches Aden Oak: a tone like our Warm Gray sample, 5.6 apart (CIEDE2000), reads as a near miss. Go clearly darker or lighter.
- Stark blue whites everywhere: a greige floor like Aden Oak turns muddy beside them. Keep the whites a little warm.

## The room it suits
- At LRV 19, Aden Oak is mid dark: it is at its best in a big room with good light and warm lamps, and it shows dust, pet hair and fine scratches more than a mid tone.
- At 7 inches a board, Aden Oak lays about 21 boards across a 12 foot room, so the room reads open with few seams.
- Aden Oak is waterproof, so it belongs in kitchens, baths, mudrooms and basements as well as living spaces.
- Wear layer: 20 mil (about 0.51 mm of clear protection over the printed wood, the part that takes the traffic)
- Core: WPC, a wood plastic composite core (a little softer and quieter underfoot)
- Finish: UV Acrylic
- Water: Waterproof (the maker's word) (wet mopping is fine; a flood is not)

## Sources
- Paint names, codes, hex and LRV as Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore publish them (each color links to its page).
- BS 8300-2:2018 asks for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, such as a floor and a wall, so the surfaces read apart.
- The floor measured from its own picture in CIELAB (D65); the wood tones from our own photographs of 37 stains on oak.
